Laois Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley has welcomed Fianna Fáil’s decision to back the abolition of water charges.
Deputy Stanley claimed FF's “about turn” is now in line with SF.
“I welcome Fianna Fáil’s change of heart as they now agree with Sinn Féin’s long held position that water charges be abolished. This is a positive development, despite the fact that it comes from the party that first committed to implementing water charges in 2010.
“This now means that there is a clear majority in the Dáil supporting the scrapping of water charges and the abolition of Irish Water and the Government should take heed of this and act accordingly,” he said.
Both parties now support a plan for water charges to be paid for from taxation.
