A Portlaoise man has been given the probation act for handling stolen property.
James Heffernan (62), with an address at Clonkeen, Portlaoise, was charged with handling stolen property, at the Mountmellick Road, Portlaoise, on March 25 last year.
The accused had previous convictions, for obstructing a peace officer, public order offences, and burglary.
At last week’s sitting of the district court in Portlaoise, defence for the accused said that his client was handing in a further €500 compensation to the court.
He said that the accused did not deliberately handle stolen goods, but he had been reckless concerning his knowledge of the property.
Defence said that the accused, who has seven children and a large number of grandchildren, had last committed an offence of this nature, burglary, back in 1987.
Defence also said that the accused had entered a guilty plea to the recent charge.
As the accused had cooperated, Judge Catherine Staines applied the probation act, section 1.2.
