Something for everyone at the Abbeyleix and Durrow Enterprise Town event

A packed two days of events are promised the joint Durrow and Abbeyliex enterprise town event this week.

The joint Durrow and Abbeyleix Enterprise Town event gets underway in Scoil Mhuire, Abbeyleix on at 5pm on Friday, October 13 and continues until 2pm on Saturday, October 15.

This free event includes entertainment, prizes and treats for all the family.

Over 50 local clubs, schools, community groups and businesses are expected to come together to put on a spectacular showcase.

On Friday at 5pm Sean Fleming, TD will open proceedings, followed by an awards presentation to BizWorld Ireland students from Raheen National School and Our Lady’s Meadow National School, Durrow.

Everyone is welcome to come along to this Free Event and the public will be treated to music from Trad musicians “Abbeyfolk” before The Business Panel Discussion kicks off at 6.30pm, hosted by Midlands Radio.

Debating local businesses issues will be Helen Gee from G’s Gourmets Jams, Jenny Kent from The Manor Hotel and Emmet Dunne from Leo Dunne Ltd.

Shane Byrne, former Leinster, Ireland and Lions rugby hooker will be speaking at 7pm and is the first of several special guests lined up for the Enterprise Town weekend.

To round off Day One of the Expo, there will be some more live entertainment before the doors close at 8pm.

The Enterprise Town Initiative is sponsored by Bank of Ireland and Abbeyleix branch manager Jason Ryan is delighted and overwhelmed by the support the event has been getting.

“We are expecting a truly fantastic event this weekend, which is down to all sectors of the community in the wider Abbeyleix and Durrow areas, who have all come together to support this initiative.”

Also running all weekend is the “Kiddies Corner” with free ice cream, face painting and goodie bags. The Laois Fire Service will also be in attendance on Friday and Saturday with engines and personnel.

Karen Flanagan, Branch Manager in Durrow encourages everyone to drop in over the weekend; “for attendees coming along on Friday and Saturday we have some great prizes to give away including Rugby Tickets, International soccer tickets and a hamper sponsored by Glanbia, to mention a few”.

On Saturday morning doors open at 11am for the Community & Sport Expo, where the day will start with Hurling and Soccer Training Camps. Keeping with the sports theme, there is a fantastic Sports Panel lined up to be hosted at 11.45am by well-known RTE broadcaster Marty Morrissey. Joining Marty on the panel are fellow pundit and former Offaly hurler Michael Duignan, as well as Kilkenny hurling star Richie Power, and Seamus “Cheddar” Plunkett. All members of the community are welcome to come along to hear the debate and meet these special guests.

The rest of the afternoon will see a full line up of entertainment including live musical performances by Spink Comhaltas and the Portlaoise Gospel Choir. Demonstrations by The World Taekwondo Association, based in Durrow, and Magic Movers - School of Dance will keep visitors of all ages entertained.

The Irish Heart Foundation's Mobile Health Unit will be available during the event on Saturday to do blood pressure checks and each person receives a personal record card with their results.
