The American styled fast food chain Eddie Rockets has been granted permission by Laois County Council to open a new restaurant at the Laois Shopping Centre.

The council has given the go-ahead for the new 1950s-flavoured restaurant to open subject to certain conditions.

Among the conditions are that the hours of operation shall be limited to the opening hours of Laois Shopping Centre, and no noise, fumes or effluents liable to give rise to reasonable cause for complaint by occupants of adjacent properties shall be permitted.

The restaurant, which will see a €500,000 investment locally, is being headed up by Durrow native Catherine Wilson (nee Gilligan).

The first Eddie Rocket Restaurant opened in Dublin in 1989 and at one point were present in 42 locations in Ireland, England, Wales, Spain and recently Northern Ireland.

The Portlaoise branch will open in the new year.
