Portlaoise boys U-12 basketball team travelled to Kilkenny to play Waterford in the Kilkenny Area League Competition.
Portlaoise started the better with early baskets from Dara Ramsbottom and Darragh Beere. Waterford were slow to get on the scoreboard despite good play from Evan Sheehy and James Grant.
Portlaoise opened up a six point gap with fine play from Jake Conroy and Ben Conroy. As the quarter came to a close Portlaoise continued to put points on the scoreboard thanks to baskets from Sam Wynne and Darragh Beere.
The second quarter got underway with both teams playing well, exchanging baskets, Portlaoise were working hard on defence and at the other end continued to score through Davin McEvoy and their captain Damien Moore.
As the halftime whistle approached Portlaoise were in control to extend their lead to eight points with good work from Matthew Delaney and Daragh Buggie.
The start of the second half saw baskets at a premium as both defences were on top, Waterford were playing well at this stage but were unlucky not to put points on the scoreboard.
Portlaoise also were battling hard for every ball and were rewarded with a couple of good baskets from James Connolly and Luke Thompson. As the quarter went on the Portlaoise had good work from Ben Conroy and Sam Wynne to maintain their lead.
The last quarter saw Portlaoise take full control of the game with strong man-to-man defence with good work from Matthew Delaney and Niall Fitzpatrick.
Waterford, to their credit, never gave up battling hard for every ball but Portlaoise went on to a comfortable 20 point win with the last two baskets of the game coming from vice-captain Davin McEvoy to help his team to a well deserved win to remain at the top of the Kilkenny Area League.
