The 2014/2015 junior hockey season kicked off in September and all Abbeyleix Junior age groups have been involved in early action.

Now in its 11th year, the Abbeyleix club has grown from strength to strength both in terms of numbers and on field achievements. The new season promises to be as successful as previous years.

U-10 Naas Blitz

Our first U10s Blitz of the 2014 - 2015 season was a delight for all as we were treated to a great morning’s hockey. Naas ably organised the event with North Kildare, Newbridge and Abbeyleix attending.

Our new players all showed great potential and their increasing mastery of the skills of the game. We are grateful to Team Leaders Sarah, Saundra, Tom and Vera for guiding and managing their young excited players so ably.

We are grateful to Libby Cashman (Naas-U10s Coordinator) and her team of helpers including the umpires for providing a very smooth running event. Thanks to the catering team for the welcome refreshments.

Thanks to team leaders Marie, Alison, Sarah, Nicole and Caroline. Next outing mid November

Tullamore U-12 Blitz

Three Abbeyleix teams travelled to Tullamore Harriers club in October to take part in the West Leinster U-12 blitz hosted by Tullamore. Twenty-two eams from Naas, Newbridge, North Kildare, Tullamore and Abbeyleix participated in a very enjoyable morning’s hockey.

Tullamore were again excellent hosts. The three Abbeyleix teams more than held their own winning seven, drawing two and losing narrowly in three, with plenty of goals and some excellent play all round.

It is fair to say that Abbeyleix well exceeded expectations with some great performances from the 23 players who participated. ,

Competition for team places will be tight with a number of additional players who were not available on day, but will be in contention for Carlow blitz in Kilkenny in mid-November. Thanks to the team coaches on day Philip, Matthew and Garry. Next up in West Leinster for the U-12s is the Abbeyleix blitz which, will be held in Tullamore.

U-14 and U-16 Training

U-14 and U-16s preparations complete and ready for competition. Both squads have been in training for past few weeks in preparation for first West Leinster outings.

Training has been intensive and well attended, and both squads had practice sessions in Kilkenny College on full size pitches. Both teams are hopeful of continuing on last year’s progress

Halloween Camp

There was a great turnout in the Park for our Halloween camp during mid-term break. Lots of drills, games and plenty of fun for the 50+ players who participated. Some new skills learned and others developed that will prove useful for upcoming games.

Great credit is due to organisers and team leads, Marie, Michael, Sarah, Ann and Garry, and special thanks to our U-16 players who assisted greatly for the sessions, Alison, Hen, Nicole and Louise. Thanks to all the Committee and parents who helped out.

Weather conditions were ideal for hockey, and the players efforts throughout the morning were rewarded with a pizza party, refreshments, and quiz in the tennis clubhouse and Youth café room.

The great facilities in the Park make the organization of events like these much easier, so thanks also to Park Committee, Tennis Club and GAA club for providing and sharing facilities.

The Camp was sponsored by Department of Health 2014 National Lottery Fund
