Laois Marlins brought a very successful 2012 to an end with a fun relay event for all members, followed by a pizza party.
Swimmers from all squads, A to D, were delighted to get a chance to compete together in mixed ability teams. Presentations were made to coaches and assistants by club chairman Kevin Bracken.
Head Coach Irina Dawson praised the efforts of Laois Marlins throughout 2012 and said she looked forward to an even better year in 2013. “We had a great year on the competitive front,” she said, “with quite a few swimmers attending All-Ireland Championship, both Divisions 1 and 2, and bringing medals back home.”
“Throughout the year,” she continued, “all those attending galas consistently improved PBs and won many medals en route. The club now has 72 members and is constantly getting stronger in terms of training, numbers and attitude. Our members are having great fun, forming and maintaining friendships that will last long into the future.”
The final competition of 2012 for Laois Marlins was the NUIM Devils Christmas Cracker Gala at the National Aquatic Center with 22 swimmers representing the club.
Two of the ten participating girls were competing in their first gala -Taylor McCormack and Ailbhe Ni Chuinn - while four of the twelve boys were also competing for the first time, John Henry-Ward, Conan Hyland, Conor McGavin and Colm Nealon. All swam very well and were delighted to now have official times with Swim Ireland.
The seasoned swimmers attained new Personal Best times and the U-10 girls freestyle relay team won silver - Ellen Donoghue, Toni Dolan, Zara McMahon and Faith Bennett. Brothers Eoin and Conor Donoghue medalled in Breast Stroke.
Coach Padraic Dolan was full of praise for the Laois swimmers and for his assistants on the day Voilet Nealon and Fiona Donoghue. He also thanked all swimmers and parents for their constant support during training and galas.
