Laois GAA, in association with Joe Mallon Motors, Portlaoise are hosting a 5k and 10k run which takes place on Sunday, May 5th at 10.30am.

Portlaoise Athletic Club member and Ireland international Dan Mulhare was on hand with Laois senior footballer Padraig Clancy and members of the Laois County Board in launching the event.

“This promises to be a great event,” said Mulhare following the launch. “A huge amount of work has taken place involving Laois GAA and members of other athletics clubs in the area. Portlaoise Athletic Club held a fantastic run on St Patrick’s Day recently so this is a great chance for runners, joggers and walkers to take part in another event in the local area.”

The starting line for the May 5th event will be at Joe Mallon Motors on the Abbeyleix Road. The company is the main sponsor for the event and Laois GAA are extremely grateful for their sponsorship despite the times we are currently live in.

“We are extremely thankful to Joe Mallon Motors for coming on board as Main Sponsors for the event,” remarked Laois GAA Chairman Gerry Kavanagh.

“This is the first time Laois GAA have ventured towards an event like this but we promise to provide a top class day and we look forward to seeing everyone on May 5th. We’re appealing to all GAA Clubs in Laois to take part also as there will also be prizes for the first GAA team home on the day.”

Located just off the M7 Motorway, parking facilities are available in the old Portlaoise GAA Grounds, beside O’Moore Park. This will also include a warm-up area and shower facilities will be available for competitors after the event.

Food and hot refreshments, which will be provided by Bosco Ramsbottom of GALA, will also be provided after each competitor finishes their event in the clubhouse, along with the prize giving ceremony.

Local physiotherapists Donncha Phelan and John Sugrue will provide a sports masseur service for us following the event.

Registeration is currently available on the Run Ireland website but it will also take place on the morning of the event from 8.45am in the old Portlaoise GAA Centre, beside O’Moore Park. Anyone who registers will then receive a unique t-shirt before the event starts.

Cost of entry for the 10k is €20 and the 5k costs €10. The event has been sanctioned by Athletics Ireland and is also officially measured.
