Mark Rohan is an Irish Cyclist, wheelchair basketball player and a former Westmeath under 21 Gaelic Football player. He was paralysed from the chest down after a serious motorbike accident in 2001.
Following his rehabilitation Mark got involved in sport again through wheelchair archery and wheelchair basketball. It was during a break in the wheelchair basketball season that Mark was introduced to paracycling and found his true passion.
He competes in the H1 classification, and won two gold medals in 2012 Summer Paralympics. He is also a double gold medallist in the 2011 UCI World Paracycling Championships in Denmark.
“That sense of freedom. There’s nothing like it in the world. When I first sat in my bike, I couldn’t have imagined the places that it would take me to and the success it would bring.
“From the lows of my accident to the elation of winning for my country on the world stage. I have enjoyed success at a level I never dreamed of and now I am totally driven to replicate that success again on the road to Rio in 2016.”
