The Laois International Golf Challenge took place from May 14 -17. This is the eighth year that the challenge has taken place and still continues to attract oversees players who come back each year to participate in the event and enjoy a relaxed break in Laois.
This year’s event was played at Portarlington, The Heath, and Portlaoise Golf Clubs, and the final took place at the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, Killenard. A separate competition took place in Abbeyleix Golf Club for those who didn’t make the completion final on Thursday.
68 golfers took part in the golf challenge over three days, with the final twenty teams with the best scores playing in the final in the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, Killenard.
The Awards ceremony for the event took place on Thursday night May the 17th at the Heritage Golf & Spa Resort, Killenard. Mr. Justin Treacy (RTE Sport) was MC on the night and announced all the results of the various prizes that were presented on the night. Over thirty prizes were awarded to various golfers over the course of the competition, including, nearest to the pin, Longest Drives, and 3rd , 2nd, and 1st prizes over the four day event.
Leas Caithoirleach of Laois County Council Cllr Paul Mitchell complemented all the clubs for their support and participation in the Golf Challenge, he also thanked all the foreign visitors for coming back to play again this year and extended a welcome to them all to return again next year.
Mr Peter Carey, Co. Manager and Chairperson of Laois Tourism said that the Golf Challenge is now an important part of the calendar of events on offer to visitors to the county. He acknowledged the work and support of the Laois International Golf Challenge Committee and its Chairman Mr Tom Treacy, in promoting the county with such a high profile event. He also thanked the Clubs for their support over the years and the Heritage Holet Portlaoise, the Maldron Hotel, Portlaoise, and the Heritage in Killenard for supporting the event.
Mr. Aidan Egan, Captain of Killenard Golf Club, thanked everyone for coming along and making the Laois Golf Challenge a success again this year, and looked forward to working with the Committee in the coming years to further enhance the Challenge.
