Laois win dramatic Leinster title

A 3-way draw for the top spot in Division 1 in the U-15 Leinster Badminton Intercounties as Wexford, Laois, and Kilkenny A each had 5 wins when the Division 1 pool games were finished. In the end on countback Laois came out on top.

Kilkenny A defeated Laois 3-2 with the match decidera close fought contest between Roslyn Hendy and Sean Faherty, LS and Charlotte Huston and Eamon Fennelly, KK. The Kilkenny pair finished on top 30/24, to win the match for their county.

The second match started very dismally for Laois against Wexford but they fought back strongly to win the match overall.

The third and final match in the series pitted Kilkenny A and Wexford A against each other with Wexford winning 3-2 to set up the dramatic countback.

Among all the coaches and county managers present, none could remember when a competition had ended with 3 teams tied for 1st place with the same number of wins,

The only way to resolve the placings was to count back individual scores. In the first match, Laois scored 122 and Kilkenny scored 112, even though Kilkenny won 3/2. In the next match, Laois won 3/2, but Laois and Wexford A were level on 123 points each. In their 3/2 win against Kilkenny, Wexford A scored 116 points to 105 for Kilkenny. When the results were announced, Laois finished the Division 1 Champions with 245 scores, Wexford A finished Runners-up with 239 scores and despite their valiant effort Kilkenny A went home empty handed, scoring only 117 points.
