Portlaoise Ladies Division 2 team continued their winning streak this week with another big win playing host to Ballyroan Cougars in St Mary’s hall on Thursday night.
Panthers need two wins from their remaining three games to secure the League title for the first time and are well on course to achieve this having gone unbeaten to date.
Portlaoise started out very strong with a three pointer from the corner by Danielle Keane to begin the home sides scoring. Rebecca Kelly was very strong under the boards making three consecutive baskets and causing all sorts of trouble.
Her tough rebounding earned her two free throws which she also converted. Emma Colohan worked her magic and made a great three pointer from her favourite spot at the top of the arc. Anna Fraizer was persistent on both offense and defensive boards. Her hard work paid off as she made some great shots under the boards.
In the second quarter great passes from Danielle Keane helped Niamh Sweeney add some points to the score. A change of players saw Aoife Brennan join her team mates on the score sheet with effortless baskets. Amy Dunphy worked endlessly on defence and offence but unfortunately her shots didn’t seem to fall on the day. Portlaoise Panthers were piling on the pressure and took an impressive lead in at half time, scoreline 43-17.
The second half was a much more even affair with both sides rotating their five throughout. This often stopped the flow of the game for Panthers as they found it hard to set up in offence. Sharon Regan fought hard on defence whic
h paid off as it gave her two great baskets. Dorothy Fahy played tough defence and kept the pressure on at all times. Donna O’Connell’s superb rebounding got her fouled under the net and punished Cougars by landing her free throw. Strong drives from Donna also helped keep the score board ticking over for Portloise as Ballyroan began to get themselves more into the game.
Portlaoise Panthers saw out the game with Leanne Hayes and Sharon Regan’s great play setting up more scores for Niamh Sweeney and Rebecca Kelly. Jane Dowling manned the boards really well in this quarter especially which started off some fast break opportunities. Panthers will be happy with the result final Score 63-36.
