McEvoy buzzer-beater floors Sonics

The Portlaoise boys U-12 basketball team travelled to Moyle Park gym Clondalkin to play Dublin Sonics.

The Portlaoise boys U-12 basketball team travelled to Moyle Park gym Clondalkin to play Dublin Sonics.

Sonics started the better with the first couple of baskets. Portlaoise were slow to get on the scoreboard despite good work from Jamie Preston and Sean Gilbather.

As the quarter went on Sonics were dominating with strong man to man defence to open up a seven point lead. Portlaoise were eventually rewarded for their hard work with the last two baskets of the quarter from Christian Kenny and Luke Thompson.

The second quarter saw a new five players from both clubs and it was Portlaoise who came out the stronger with the first couple of baskets from Davin McEvoy and their Captain Damien Moore. Portlaoise were right back in the game with good work from Dara Ramsbottom and Matthew Delaney.

As the half-time whistle approached their was little or nothing between the teams with both playing well, Portlaoise had good performances from their two base players Aaron Dooley and Davin McEvoy, but Sonics got the last two baskets to see them maintain their four point lead at the break, 16-12.

The second half saw Sonics again up the tempo and were rewarded with the first couple of baskets. Portlaoise continued to work hard with Jamie Preston and Luke Thompson putting in good work but they were unlucky with the final shot.

As the quarter went on Portlaoise eventually were rewarded for their hard work with a couple of fine baskets from Sean Gilbather. The last quarter saw the Portlaoise lads start to dominate for the first time with strong defence and fine shooting from Dara Ramsbottom and Damien Moore.

Portlaoise were now in full flow with excellent work from Tiernan Hayes and Matthew Delaney resulting in baskets to reduce the gap to two points. Portlaoise went on to finish the stronger with baskets from Damien Moore and a buzzer beater from the halfway line from Davin McEvoy to secure a brilliant win that was celebrated by all his team mates and their travelling supporters.
