The members of Laois Marlins Swim Club got together recently for an end of year party.
“It was a well deserved celebration,” said Club Coach Irina Dawson who added that it had been ‘a great year on every level’.
“All of our members developed in so many ways, general fitness, increased stamina, technical skills, and recorded times all showing huge improvement.”
Just before the end of year break, ten Laois Marlins swam in the NUIM Fifth Annual Christmas Gala at Dublin’s National Aquatic Centre- Thomas Martin, Oisin Ryan, Ryan Flynn, Jordan Overton, Christopher Carew, George Byrne, James Johnson, Zara McMahon, Alice Carew and Claire Byrne. They all performed very well, improving PB’s, and very much enjoyed the day.
The same weekend, three Marlins swam in the All Ireland Schools Finals- Toni Dolan, Conor Donoghue and Ellen Donoghue. All three recorded improved PB’s and Ellen was placed in the Breaststroke Final.
Club Chairman Kevin Bracken is very pleased with how the club is progressing. “We are a young club,” he said, “and we are exceeding expectations all round.”
There is an ever increasing interest being expressed by parents of potential new members,” he continued, “and while they want their children to gain from the huge health benefits associated with swimming, they are also impressed with the social element of the club, which brings young people together from towns and villages throughout the county.”
Trials for new members will be held in the coming weeks. And while training takes place at the Portlaoise Leisure Centre, membership is open to young people from all areas within Laois and outside the county. For further information, contact Club Secretary Violet Nealon on (086) 8953209
