Laois native Michael Mulhare, who was part of the gold medal winning U-23 Irish Cross Country team in 2009, was on hand last week at the launch of the 2014 Aviva Irish Schools’ Cross County Season in Santry Park.
He was joined by fellow cross country international Mary Cullen and a number of current schools cross country athletes.
The day brought back memories for the Laois athlete who pinpointed the School’s Cross Country Championships as where it all began for him.
Michael Mulhare commented, “I have very fond memories of the Irish schools cross country competitions, it’s where it all really began for me, my sister (Mary) and brother (Dan) also competed and our youngest brother David is competing this year”
The Leinster event was held last Wednesday and the qualifiers from the Leinster region will go on to represent their school at the Aviva All Ireland School Cross Country Championships in Cork IT on March 8.
The Aviva Irish Schools Cross Country Championships will see over 15,000 athletes compete across the country this year from regional heats through to provincial finals and the All-Ireland Finals in March.
The leading athletes from the National Finals will then be selected to represent their country at the Schools International Cross Country Championships in Bolton, England on March22.
John Foley, Chief Executive of Athletics Ireland said “We are delighted that Aviva continue to support Irish Schools’ athletics. Their continued support allows us to deliver a quality competition programme for all schools athletes and to increase participation in the sport
