Saturday, June 2 saw four junior kickboxers form Laois Martial Arts become the youngest in Laois and among the youngest in Ireland to achieve their First Degree Black Belts.

Bobby Hyland (14), Peter Dunne (10), JP Daly(11) and Chloe Shortall (9) have all been training for over 5 and a half years at Laois Martial Arts. Club Instructor Shane Culleton, a fourth degree black belt in Kickboxing and Taekwondo, stated that all of the juniors had trained for the past five and a half years to achieve their black belts.

Over the past year they trained three times a week, which involved working with the senior group aswel. The examination itself lasted for five hours on the day, being divided up into technical work, pad work, bag work, sparring, fitness and self defense.

Shane stated he was very proud of their achievement as it requires focus, discipline and total dedication to receive this level in the sport, especially from kids that young. Shane would like to thank, assistant coach Thomas Dunne, the students and their parents for their constant effort and support in helping them to get to this level.

It requires huge support from parents to help the kids achieve this level. Also a huge thank you to the club committee for their hard work over the past couple of months. For details on kickboxing in Co. Laois contact 085 1371842
