The marathon cycling exploits of Mary Callanan, Brian Bonham and Andrew Cremin from Portlaoise have raised €8670 for the Sports Inclusion Disability (SID) programme.
The daring Laois trio cycled from La Rochelle in France back to Portlaoise, totalling 750km over seven days.
The SID Programme was developed by Laois Sports Partnership and was the first local sports partnership to appoint a Disability Officer, Garrett Culliton. The Vision of Laois Sports Partnership is to promote lifelong participation in sports and physical activities in County Laois and the SID programme reflects the true heart of the organisation which values opportunities for all and particular supports for some.
“The funds raised from Cycle for SID allow Laois Sports Partnership to continue to provide sports activities for over 400 people with disabilities in Laois. With the assistance of over 250 volunteers, we run programmes such as Tandem Cycling, Laois Boccia League, Soccer, Basketball/Wheelchair Basketball, Inclusive Leisure Centre Activities, Athletics, Badminton to name but a few,” stated Garrett Culliton, SIDO co-ordinator, Laois Sports Partnership.
“We are extremely grateful to Mary, Brian, Andrew for taking the time out of their lives to go to France and take on this challenge,” he added.
Cyclist Brian Bonham commented, “We really enjoyed taking part in the Cycle for the Sports Inclusion Disability Programme. We wanted to support people with disabilities in County Laois and as the programme is part funded, the remainder has to be fundraised so we decided to get fundraising by doing something we very much enjoy which is cycling. We would like to thank friends, family members and everyone that supported us along the way. It was a tough cycle but it was worth it.”
Caroline Myers Laois Sports Partnership remarked, “We want to congratulate all the raffle winners. We also wish to thank each and every person who purchased a raffle ticket and donated their time to support this event. It is through the remarkable kindness of the cyclists, public and volunteers that we were able to organise such an event.”
A huge thanks to the sponsors of Cycle for SID who include; Colgan Sports, Supreme Sports, JetPrint, KC Sports, The Leinster Express and O’Loughlin’s Hotel. Thanks to Season’s Bistro and Relish Restaurant for their donations to the raffle. The Cycle for SID raffle took place last Thursday in O’Loughlin’s hotel. All proceeds raised from the cycle will go to the SIDO programme run by Laois Sports Partnership.
