Kestrels claim Kilkenny league crown

The Kilkenny U-18 Girls Championship final took place on Tuesday, April 3 in O’Loughlin Gaels court.

The Kilkenny U-18 Girls Championship final took place on Tuesday, April 3 in O’Loughlin Gaels court.

Kestrels, having seen off Berkeley in their semi-final game, were up against league winners Castlecomer in this eagerly awaited clash. Having lost to Castlecomer in the league the Laois girls were determined to grasp every opportunity to score.

Both sides got a couple of early baskets, with very little between them at the end of the opening quarter. The two teams continued trading baskets, and exchanging the lead.

Going into the final quarter Kestrels made a final surge and took the lead early on, and at last began to pull ahead. They dug deep to maintain this lead, and held out to win the game by seven baskets.

After the match, team captain Megan Dunne accepted the the Cup on behalf of Kestrels. The team attended the Kilkenny Basketball Awards on Saturday Night in Langtons Hotel, and received their trophies.
