Team Silvers made it two wins in a week on Saturday night to keep their unbeaten run intact and cemented their place on top of the league in the process. The game looked well out of Longford’s reach by half time but their never say die attitude saw them revive their chances in the final quarter running the home side close in the end.
The game started at a frantic pace with both sides choosing to run the ball on every opportunity given to them. Team Silvers dominated the early exchanges and repeatedly scored on the break after solid defensive play. Gary Donnelly and Rody McEvoy were causing all sorts of problems as Longford tried to the combat the side’s inside threat. Three pointers from Peter O’Sullivan and David Keane pushed Team Silvers lead out to fourteen points by the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was a more even affair as both sides traded some great scores. The introduction of Portlaoise club newcomers John Kerr and Lorcan Dooley added the energy needed to keep the pressure on both ends of the floor. Their outside threat allowed for space inside the key and Team Silvers Pierce Fagan went to work on extending his teams lead, working tirelessly to create the perfect chances. Team Silvers took a sixteen point lead in at half time and at this stage it looked like the home side would push on and win by a massive margin.
A perfect start to the third quarter for the Portlaoise men saw the extend their lead out to twenty one points with a brilliant three pointer from Lorcan Dooley which was followed up quickly by some great individual work by Dan Debosz and he finished well to the basket. Great defensive work from Peter Duignan and Greg Dunne kept their big men quiet throughout, limiting the options available for the visitors. Team Silvers took an eighteen point lead into the last quarter.
Anyone in attendance would have been forgiven for leaving at this point and those who did missed an exhibition of outside shooting in what was a brilliant fight back from the Longford men. A quick succession of three point shots from Sheehan closed the gap down to ten points early on which took the home side by surprise. The Panthers men were finding it hard to get any rhythm in offence and once again were being punished at the other end. A quickfire three pointer from Longford’s Shane Murphy put just two points between the sides, the narrowest margin since the start of the first quarter. Luckily for Panthers they began to control the offence with Rody Mc Evoy on the point who threw the ball around to waste time to see out the game. Late scores by Dan Debosz gave the home side a five point advantage at the end. The performance was far from perfect but the correct result keeps Team Silvers out in front with a 100% record.
