Maryborough started back into their 2014/15 campaign with a 4-3 loss against Rosenallis. For the majority of the game, particularly the first half Maryborough were the stronger team and perhaps deserved more.

It was Rosenallis who started faster and they opened the scoring with five minutes on the clock. A soft free kick on the left of the box was sent in with a defection by the Maryborough defender sending the ball into the back of the net.

Maryborough soon came into the game and brought the scores level after 17 minutes. A cross in from the right wing by Dan Langan came off the post. It rebounded across the goal line where Donnacha O’Reilly was in the right spot to finish.

Rosenallis retook the lead thanks to some sloppy defending. From a counter attack, the ball was crossed from the right. No player from either side touched the ball and it was crossed again from the left. This time the Rosenallis attacker was on hand for the easy finish.

Just past the half hour mark, Maryborough equalised again. Colm Phelan won the ball well and played in Dan Langan whose long range shot was placed perfectly out of reach of the ‘keeper. With ten minutes left in the half, Maryborough took the lead. Attacking down the left wing, Maryborough winger JoJo Thompson pulled the ball back to Colm Phelan and his first time, looping shot was never going to be stopped as curled to the back of the net.

Rosenallis came out stronger in the second half and some last ditch defending by Troy Fagan and Philip Lewis kept Maryborough’s thin lead. Maryborough seemed content to sit on their lead and let Rosenallis back into the game. They were punished ten minutes into the half.

Another counter attack gave Rosenallis a one-on-one with the keeper. The attacker lobbed the keeper and the retreating defender could not stop the ball going into the net.

The tempo and quality of the game started to drop as both sets of players showed their rustiness after the Christmas break. Rosenallis were awarded a number of late frees that frustrated Maryborough.

Rosenallis got the winning goal from one such free kick when they caught Maryborough napping. Their attacker shot into the bottom corner, out of Troy Fagan’s reach.

Maryborough will forget about this match and concentrate on the rest of the season. If they play as they did in the first half, tighten up defensively and see out games the victories will come.
