Kate Whelan (U-12) and Jessie Hayes (U-10) took top honours in this seasons Munster Table Tennis Open in the Glen Eagles INEC over the weekend.

This was Round 3 of the five round All-Ireland series with Whelan winning all three to date and is already crowned Irish National Champion for 2011/2012. A super achievement for the young Laois lady who has just turned 11. Her 3-1 victory in the final over Rebecca Finn of Lisburn was a closely faught affair which had so much at stake, as Finn had to win to remain in contention, while Kate was on the edge of an overall national title.

She has already booked her place on the Irish team for the upcomming International primary schools event in Scotland in April. Hayes took top honours in U-10 with a similar score over Ciara O’Toole of Dublin in what was also a repeat final of the first two rounds, with all to play for in the remaining two rounds in Castlebar and Dublin in 2012.

Amylou Hayes, who is in her fifth year of national events, continued her consistent form and collected bronze in the U-14. All three girls have been called up for National Squad training in December. Leanne Delaney continues to make excelent progress and made it to the latter stages in the U-12 finals, where she took a top ten finish at number seven.

Dylan Grace took gold and Eimile McWey silver in U-14 Division 2. Overall a weekend of rich pickings for Laois Table Tennis in which 15 junior players from the county attended top class competition among a field of top international players in a top class venue in Killarney, Co Kerry.
