The U-16 girls played their second midland league blitz on Saturday last in Clonaslee.

After the weekend’s games they remain unbeaten in the campaign. The first game was against a strong team from Old Leighlin in Carlow. The game started tight and saw Old Leiglin take an early lead but the girls fought hard to get back in front at the end of the first quarter.

The Portlaoise girls never let this lead slip after that only extended it. Some great rebounding by Orla O’Donovan and Claire Melia set up some super fast breaks with Aisling McCauley coming out on top at the end of the breaks racking up some great baskets.

Cliodhna Nic Ghearailt also picked up some good offensive rebounds to add extra points on the board.

The game ended with a comfortable win by Portlaoise Panthers.

The second game was a one sided affair with the Portlaoise girls leading by 13 points at the end of the first quarter and extended the lead to over 20 points at the half.

Portlaoise’s defensive performance was outstanding and this allowed the girls to push on in offense. All nineteen players that travelled to the games yesterday played and eleven of them got on the scoresheet.

The dedication and drive of this panel is definitely reaping its rewards.

Their next midland league outing will be a very exciting affair with the girls coming up against their local rivals Kestrels in what promises to be a great contest in Portarlington on December 7th.
