Canoeists paddling for charity

The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold a sponsored twin event in aid of The Make Believers charity group comprising of a duathlon (canoe and cycle) and an all-cycle tour on Sunday July 10.

The Woodenbridge Paddlers will hold a sponsored twin event in aid of The Make Believers charity group comprising of a duathlon (canoe and cycle) and an all-cycle tour on Sunday July 10.

Both events get underway from Newtown Mill at 1.30pm. When the canoeists set off on the first leg of the duathlon on the river Goul and continue on the Erkina, and Nore to the half way point at Ballyragget (refreshment stop) where participants will transfer to their bicycles for the second leg and continue through Lisdowney, Aharney, Ballykealy to the finish in Cullahill.

The cycle tour which is open to all cycle enthusiasts of all levels and will travel through Ballacolla, Durrow, Attanagh, to the half way point at Ballyragget whare they meet their canoeing counterparts and continue on the rout already outlined. The Make Believers charity was set up by three nurses in 2009. It works with staff on the paediatric wards of hospitals in Portlaoise and elsewhere as well as the central remedial clinic to help children who are coping with terminal and long term illness.

Last year the Make Believers helped nearly 70 familys from Laois and beyond to meet the real Santa Claus during their Winter Wonderland in Durrow.
