The Portlaoise U-16 girls remain unbeaten in the midland league as they claim another good win on Saturday last over Athlone.
Portlaoise started very well holding Athlone to only four points in the first quarter while scoring 17 themselves. They were performing very well on both ends of the floor.
Sekenat Shabawole caught some great offensive and defensive rebounds and the girls ran the floor very well picking up most of their scores from fast breaks.
The second quarter was a much tighter affair with Portlaoise just about winning the quarter 7-6. The offensive play became very static and Claire Melia was the only player to put points on the board.
There were a lot of baskets missed under the boards and the intensity also began to drop. Half time could not have come quick enough. It gave the girls time to refocus and settle back into the game.
There were some great assists by Shauna Vandendries and Maeve Phelan in the third quarter to set up Claire again to finish under the boards. Although Portlaoise were leading well the Athlone girls refused to give up and matched Portlaoise on the scoreboard in the third and fourth quarters.
Jennifer O’Shea was very unlucky not to have two baskets coming to the end of the game. The quick start to the game for Portlaoise is what was the deciding factor at the end.
