Leinster Senior and Juvenile Relay Cross Country Championships
Ballyroan Abbeyleix & District AC were the proud hosts of this years Leinster Senior and Juvenile Relay Cross Country Championships on Sunday 20th January last in the beautiful setting of Blandsfort House and Estate Lands in Ballyroan.
Ballyfin’s Riobard Miller ran a terrific race in the 10,000m Senior Mens in a time of 39:35 coming home in 34th position and just missing out by a few places in the County Team. Well done Riobard!
Despite being very young and only their first year of competitive running, the U-12 boys and girls team did us proud at Leinster level in what were very cold conditions. It was a great honour to represent the County at the Leinsters and a big thank you has to be extended to our brave athletes who made up the teams on the day as follows - U-12 Girls: Dearbhail Cuddy, Roisin Bland, Maeve Carroll and Katie Conroy. U-12 Boys: James Wheeler, Adam Connolly, Conall Rowney and Sean O’Rourke. Its onwards and upwards for these girls and boys and hopefully such an event will be good experience and help them in future county and inter-club events. Well done Ballyroan Abbeyleix and District AC for hosting and organising this successful event.
Great Heath 10k
There was a fantastic turnout for the Great Heath 10k on Sunday 20th last in what was a well organised event. Five runners from Ballyfin made the trip, aquitting themselves well on the 10k circuit. Damien Cullinan ran well coming home in 51:03 with Sean Connolly also taking part coming home in just under the hour. The Ladies were well represented with Helen Coughlan first home in 52:31, Geraldine Goode in 53:33 and Michelle Dalton in 55:58. Congratulations to all the Ballyfin runners who took part and well done to everyone on great times.

Laois Senior Cross Country
On Sunday Blandsfort House, Ballyroan was the setting for the Leinster Senior and Junior Cross Country Championships. Performance of the day went to David Mulhare who ran in the Junior 6K. David went into the lead after about 1K and continued to open the gap on the rest of the field to come home a clear winner and in the process won his
first provincial title. In the Senior ladies 5K Portlaoise had four competitors. Paula Grant and Ruth Hodgins finished in 14th and 19th respectively. These places were enough to help Laois to silver team medals. They were followed home by Sharon Grant and Pam Power which put Portlaoise into the 5th club place. In the Senior mens 10K Harry
Lupton had a fine run to finish in 10th place. Laois also took silver in this race with Harry the second placed Laois runner on the team. The other Portlaoise athletes to compete were Cyril Cuddy, Jimmy McCormack and Brian Madden.

Stephen Leads Laois Home
An excellent course in Ballyroan was the venue for the Leinster cross country championships on Sunday last. Hosted by the newly formed Ballyroan/Abbeyleix and District athletic club a good turnout on a rather cold day saw several good battles in both the juvenile relays and the junior and senior events.
Thanks to all the parents who turned out. We fielded teams in most of the relays, they included:- Shane Buggy, Sean Dollard, Brian O’Sullivan, Colin Dragoi, T.J. Burke, Cara Maher, Ruby Millet, Daena Kealy, Ciara McDonald, Killian Mulhall, Cian Kelly, Niall Brennan, Mikey Dempsey, Tom Buggy, Gerard Kelly, Conor Mulhall, Oisin Ryan, Eanna Ryan, Niamh Moore, Alannah O’Rourke, Lucy O’Neill, Maeve Maher, Elizabeth Brophy, Lauryn Kealy and Laura Graham with the boys U-14 taking the silver medals.
Our junior men’s team saw James Moore reverse the result of the county junior cross country championships to beat James Delaney when finishing 8th and leading the club team to bronze medal position, just a few points short of gold. James Delaney 12th, Joseph Barry 14th and Dylan Byrne despite carrying a leg injury a game 18th, with the bonus of taking the silver in the inter county section.
Our sole representation in the ladies was Breda Mulcahy who had a fine run to score on the silver medal Laois team in 22nd place - it was a mighty performance from the former Kilkenny footballer. The senior men had five laps over a 2K course and with a strong Dublin participation a fine race was in prospect. Settling in over the first lap Stephen Lawlor was in 15th spot and moving nicely. As the race progressed he continued his forward momentum taking a place at a time. Going out on the last lap he had moved into sixth place which he nailed down and was the first Laois man home to take the silver medals and complete a good day for the county. The medal table showed Laois with three sets of silver from the four races, a nice achievement on home ground.
Athlone IT will be the centre of activity with its new indoor arena with six lanes on a 200 metre banked bends over the next couple of months. The AAI games and the combined events are scheduled to get things moving this weekend, while the Universities and the Leinster juvenile relays along with junior, senior and masters are on the following weekend. This will be followed by the National masters on the 9th February and the juniors and U.23 on the 10th February. The National seniors are on the 16th and 17th February so plenty of indoor action to look forward to.
