Portlaoise athletic club saw record numbers turn out for their annual 5k road race which took part on St. Patrick’s Day.
The morning began with over 230 children taking part in the children races. Portlaoise credit union and Mulhalls Supervalu sponsored the children’s goodie bags which consisted of a medal, Easter egg and water and they went down a treat with the young athletics.
The main race began at 11.30 am with over 560 runners lined up on the main street. Elite runners from all across the country joined runners doing their first 5k race. Thomas Hayes from Kilkenny won the men’s race in 15:19 with local girl Mary Mulhare, Portlaoise A.C. taking the women’s title in 17.37.
Delaney’s Pub, Portlaoise represented by local man Donnacha O’ Reilly won the ‘Fastest Pub in Portlaoise’. They were followed closely by O’Loughlin’s Hotel in 2nd and Heritage Hotel in 3rd.
