On Thursday night last, two thrilling LPPL Shield second leg quarter final encounters took place when The Gatehouse from Emo took on Lennon’s B team from Durrow and The Phoenix Inn took on The Final Furlong in Ballybrittas.

The Gatehouse had gone into this second leg trailing Lennon’s B 9-6, not a huge mountain to climb in a best of 31 decider.

However on the night The Gatehouse went in determined to keep themselves in this year’s league.

At the end the score line proved how much each team wanted this victory as both teams ended up in a final frame decider at 15 frames all.

For the last and very important final frame both team captains put forth their best players but it was The Gatehouse who prevailed and took home the victory with a 16-15 score line.

The other LPPL Shield Quarter final second leg clash between The Final Furlong and Phoenix Inn was also a thriller. The Phoenix Inn had gone into the second leg fixture trialling by a massive deficit of 12-3 but they put in a sterling performance winning 10-4 on the night. Unfortunately it was not enough as The Furlong took the last frame to secure their spot in the semi finals on an aggregate score line of 16-13.

In the last Shield second leg quarter final, Nappers B team were due to play Lennon’s C team, the score on this had not been confirmed at time of going to press but the winner of this will play Lennon’s A team who await them in the semi finals.

In the LPPL Cup semi finals, the big guns of the league are all ready to play their second leg encounters which will ultimately decide who will make the final of this year’s Laois Pub Pool League.

After a win against The Gatehouse in the quarters of the Cup, The Horseshoe played Ryan’s B team from Portlaoise who are tipped to do very well all season. This semi final first leg took place last week and it was the men from Abbeyleix who took the lead defeating Ryan’s B 10-5 on the night. The second leg was due to be played last night (Tuesday).

In the other Cup semi final, Ryan’s A team lead Napper Tandy’s A 11-4 and at the time of going to press the second leg result was not yet in but it seems Ryan’s A will be heavy favourites to progress to the final against The Horseshoe or Ryan’s B team.
