Laois athlete Robbie Lyons will head for the World Transplant Games in Durban, South Africa later this month with the words of Niall Quinn ringing in his ears, after meeting the former Irish international recently.

Quinn gave a talk to Lyons and his fellow transplant athletes at a training session in the ALSAA complex in Dublin.

The World Transplant Games take place from July 28 to August 5, with athletes currently fundraising to help offset the costs of the trip.

Lyons will be hoping to rediscover his form of last year in Croatia when he competed in the European Championships, where he won medals in the long-jump, the 100m and the 400m. At the last World Transplant Games in Sweden two years ago, he broke the long-jump record.
