A cannabis growhouse containing over €10,000 of the drug was last week discovered by gardaí in the Mountrath area.
A garda spokesperson has revealed that one 23-year-old man, not from the locality, has been arrested and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The growhouse was discovered in a rented accommodation in a rural area of Mountrath last Wednesday, July 2.
In the wake of the seizure of the drugs, the gardaí are encouraging people to report anything suspicious in their areas in relation to the cultivation of cannabis. Warning signs could be blacked out windows in houses, or suspicious comings and goings at all hours, especially with the presence of bags of peat and moss which could be used as fertiliser.
The garda spokesperson has said that growhouses are typically being contained within rented accommodation, so landlords of properties are advised to take note of any disruption to the electricity supply to the premises, which could indicate extra power is being harnessed to help the plants grow.
In other crime news, the gardaí have reported a number of burglaries across the county within in the past seven days, with a firearm taken from a home in Portlaoise.
The legally held firearm was taken from a house early last week, and the garda spokesperson is issuing a warning to all owners of firearms to keep their weapons under secure storage.
A number of other houses were broken into, or attempts were made to enter them, in Portlaoise, Portarlington and Abbeyleix. There was no entry gained in a number of cases, although in one burglary electronic equipment was stolen.
On Sunday, July 6, a number of burglaries occurred in the area of Portarlington town. In one incident, a black car described as “an old style black car” was seen leaving the area of the Lansdowne Road. A number of youths in their 20s were also spotted, and gardaí are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the car or the youths to contact the garda station.
