Two young people have been terrorising Portlaoise motorists by getting into their cars and begging for money.
The issue was raised by Portlaoise Town Councillor, Caroline Dwane at a recent meeting of the Portlaoise Joint Policing Committee.
“There are a couple of individuals begging, hopping into cars and refusing to get out unless they are given money,” the Sinn Fein councillor told the meeting.
She continued: “I have witnessed several people being intimidated by them.”
Cllr Dwane described the two individuals as a nuisance and asked Supt Yvonna Lundon and Sgt Tom Walton, who were present at the meeting what could be done to stop them.
Cllr Kathleen O’Brien described the incidents as “very frightening.”
“I wonder how many people are actually reporting them, if people don’t report these things then it is no good to the Gardaí.”
Cllr Willie Aird said he had also heard of such incidents.
“These two individuals need help. We should write to the HSE and ask them to provide more places for people that need help.
“She seems like a nice girl, if only they could access help,” he said.
Superintendent Yvonne Lundon said in relation to the two people begging, prosecutions were before the court.
“There are other associated issues and until these are addressed incidents will occur,” she said.
