Cllr Willie Aird described it as “sad” that councillors could no longer offer votes of sympathy until the end of the council’s monthly meeting.

Cllr Ray Cribbin said he had been refused votes of sympathy for the last few months.

However, Cathaoirleach Mary Sweeney said it was wrong to say that councillors weren’t allowed to offer votes of sympathy anymore.

“In February 2013 a new bereavement protocol was agreed,” she said before reading out the new protocol.
