Mountmellick lights up for Christmas

Mountmellick Christmas Tree and street lights will be switched on this Friday, November 29 at 8pm, just in time for RTE’s Late Late Toy Show that night.

Mountmellick Pipe Band and St Joseph’s Accordian Band, Portlaoise will entertain the crowds in O’Connell Square.

The Christmas Tree Committee will hold a church gate collection this Saturday and Sunday, November 30 and December 1. They will hold their annual door to door collection on Saturday December 7, and all are asked to support this wonderful community tradition, ongoing for over 50 years.

On Sunday December 22, the committee bring Santa Claus to Mountmellick Community Arts Centre to meet every schoolchild aged 10 and under, handing out over 600 toys in what is always a fun filled noisy afternoon with lots of local stage entertainment.

Tickets will be distributed in local schools.

The committee also give free fuel to the old age pensioners, last year delivering over €2,800 worth of solid fuel.

“Anybody who wants the fuel can contact us,” said committee chairman Brian Lynch.

Mountmellick Christmas Fair will be held next Sunday December 8 in the square from 1pm to 6pm.
