Roundabouts on the Mountmellick Road in Portlaoise are long overdue, according to Cllr Clare Spollen, who recently called on Laois County Council to seek funding from the NRA to install three roundabouts.
At the last monthly meeting of Portlaoise Town Council, Cllr Spollen asked for roundabouts to be built on the Mountmellick Road at the Ballyfin Road junction, Dunnes Stores junction and Harpurs Lane junction.
In a written reply from PJ Dempsey, road design office, she was informed that:
“The installation of roundabouts, in urban areas, is not viewed favourably under the new Department of Transport Design guidelines.
“The council does not consider that any funding application for roundabouts at these locations would be successful.”
“The Ballyfin Road is very, very bad and Harpurs Lane is atrocious,” said Cllr Spollen. “I don’t see why we can’t have roundabouts.”
“Every other week there’s a car accident on the Mountmellick Road,” agreed Cllr Caroline Dwane. “It’s vital the council look for funding.”
