A woman who tried to smuggle drugs hidden in her underwear into the Midlands Prison to give to her son was last week given the benefit of the probation act.

Marie McAuley, 28C Liberty House, Dublin, was charged with drug possession, and placing a controlled drug into prison, on January 18 last year.

Inspector Aidan Farrelly gave evidence that she was detected with tablets concealed in her underwear, which turned out to be diazepam valued at €200.

She had no previous convictions.

Defence for McAuley said the 47-year-old foolishly agreed to bring the tablets into prison for her son.

Judge Staines applied the probation act, section 1.1.
