“There is nothing second hand about a €3 million investment in an existing campus,” Senator John Whelan said.

Deputy Brian Stanley said new schools have to meet new building requirements. “The dept will not sanction anything shoddy or unsafe,” he said.

Deputy Sean FlemingTD advised holding out for a new building. “If you take somewhere they do up for the meantime, you will still be there in ten years,” he said.

Portlaoise councillors Catherine Fitzgerald, Willie Aird and Mary Sweeney all urged consensus.
