Pupils and staff at Timahoe NS recently celebrated ‘Happiness Day’ as part of their ‘Be-Well Month’ to promote both healthy minds and bodies.
A day packed with activities was organised and despite recent rain the sun shone down to help make it an even bigger success.
The children practiced everything from mindfulness to meditation, random acts of kindness to gratitude activities, with the mantra of happiness.
The highlight came at 12 noon on the Village Green, where ‘A Minute’s Happiness’ was shared with parents, locals and passers-by.
“The village came alive with the sight and sound of every class in the school waving placards and signs bearing messages of happiness, cheering and laughing and sending positive messages through the whole village and beyond,” said teacher Ms Mulhall.
Before returning to the school one student from each class released a balloon symbolising the letting go of worries and woes.
Back at the school the celebrations continued with ice cream for all before the grand finale, a basketball showdown between 6th class and a staff selection.
Although the staff had a distinct height advantage, 6th class really put it up to them, in what was a hard fought and extremely close encounter, and what may become an annual event.
School principal Ann Bergin praised students and staff, in particular SPHE co-ordinator Orla Mulhare.
“There was a special connectedness throughout the day and indeed the month, and I hope to engage further training and develop further support for the school community in terms of mental well-being,” she said.
