€12 million spend on schools sees Laois catch up

Laois caught up with other counties in school building spending in 2013.

Figures published in the Dáil by Minister for Education Ruairi Quinn reveal that there was more than €12.2 million in capital spending in Laois last year. The spending put Laois in the top six counties in terms of money spent.

Much of the money is likely to have gone the three new primary schools which opened in Portlaoise last September.

The money spent brings to nearly €50 million the amount of public funds spent in Laois on school buildings since 2009. In that year Laois benefited from a €16.4 million investment - the most money spent on Laois schools in the figure provided by Minister Quinn. However, just €6.1 million was spent in 2010.
