An occupational therapist from Saplings School in Graigueucllen is this week undertaking a grueling ten marathongs in ten days to raise funds for the students of the school.

An occupational therapist from Saplings School in Graigueucllen is this week undertaking a grueling ten marathongs in ten days to raise funds for the students of the school.

Denzil Jacobs is putting his body on the line for the students of the special school for Children with Autism and Complex Needs.

“Through working with the kids I have seen the problems they encounter on a daily basis and the fight they have. There can sometimes be a lack of consideration for them in society, there is a lack of resources and the kids suffer.

“So I said I would combine my love of running and try and help the kids,” Denzil explained.

And so with the help of his Saplings colleagues, students and parents Denzil started the ‘Denzil’s Doing It’ campaign with the aim of raising €10,000 in two months.

He is now half way through the challenge and is keeping in contact with his hundreds of supporters through his facebook page.

“Hi day 4 done in a even hotter day. I’m delighted with 4:02:44. Thanks be to God I just felt superb despite hot weather which didn’t help. But the community and race organisers came out with ice bags and lollies. The atmosphere great today,” Denzil posted on Monday morning.

Over the last six months Denzil has been clocking up the miles, spending a lot of time training.

“I’m running every chance I get to get in as many miles as possible. We have even got the kids out running in the community with me and this has been great for integration and raising awareness.”

While Denzil sometimes wonders was he mad to take on such a challenge, he is no stranger to marathon running, having completed over 60 in his lifetime so far.

Denzil ran his last race in late June and then slowed down his preparations to ensure he was fit and rearing to go for the first marathon on July 4.

“You have to rest in the couple of weeks before the marathons to ensure your legs are as fresh as possible, it’s frustrating as your body is used to doing lots of miles and then all of a sudden you stop. It’s hard to slow down, but it’s important to stay injury free,” Denzil explained.

“It’s important for the first five or six days of the challenge not to burn youself out.”
