18-yr-old thief ‘on thin ice’ - defence

A Monasterevin woman has been given community service having been convicted of stealing cosmetics.

Chantelle Carthy, Halting Site, Monasterevin, entered Boots, Laois Shopping Centre, Portlaoise, on January 13 this year, where she stole make-up and cologne valued at €400. She was identified two days later and arrested, making full admissions to the gardaí.

She has one previous conviction.

Defence, Ms Josephine Fitzpatrick said that Carthy had previously benefitted from the probation act.

“She’s on thin ice, even though she’s only 18 years young,” said Ms Fitzpatrick.

Defence said that Carthy is one of six siblings and has an eight-month-old son, and she appreciates the seriousness of the offence.

Judge Staines imposed 200 hours’ community service, in lieu of six months in prison.
