The ‘Cool Guys and Pink Haired Ladies’ of Mountmellick have presented a generous cheque to The Cuisle Centre, following a successful month long fundraiser.
The group had aimed to raise a one-off target of €10,000 for the cancer support service in Portlaoise, but far outdid that, handing a cheque for €17,500 to Director of Services Stella Moran in the Druid Inn, Mountmellick recently.
More money is still coming in says organiser John Storey. He is thrilled with the strong local support for their fundraising idea, not just in terms of money, but through the stories and memories people have shared of their loved ones’ battles with cancer.
“There are so many ordinary individuals touched, or have a family member who has been touched, and helped by the Cuisle Centre. The amount of people I have met since we started this, it’s amazing,” he said.
About 120 people took sponsorship cards for various shaves, waxes, beard growing or wig wearing attempts, The group’s Pink Wig Walk raised about €1000, and the big fundraising night in The Rock GAA Club raised another €3,000, with the rest through the sponsorship cards.
“The night was great, a good bit of craic, and a good feeling to be honest,” said John, thanking everybody who helped in any way.
The group will not be repeating the fundraiser, but John thinks it has potential in other towns.
“Ideally I would like to hand over the concept to another town in Laois, to hold it again for Cuisle,” he said.
Stella Moran from the Cuisle Centre said they were delighted with the unexpected boost to their income.
“This will go towards patient therapies, counselling, group therapies. It will help to keep up these free services we provide, we get no public funding and we are totally dependent on fundraisers like this to keep going. We would like to thank the organising committee and the community of Mountmellick for their support,” she said.
