Community groups are urged to submit their applications for the Laois Community and Voluntary Awards which again incorporate the Leinster Express Person of the Year Award.

This year’s awards take place on November 27 next at the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel and are hosted by Laois Community Forum with the support of Laois County Council, Laois Sports Partnership and the Leinster Express.

Paddy Buggy, chairman of Laois Forum said the event celebrates volunteers.

“There is even more to celebrate this year with so many successful events both large and small taking place proving that Laois can hold its own with the best in the world. But we must not forget the valuable work which continues under the radar and our awards night is where this work is acknowledged,” he said.

The Leinster Express editor, Pat Somers said the paper was honoured to be involved.

“The acknowledgment of the contribution of individuals and groups to community and voluntary life is integral to our ethos as a paper. Communities and individuals across the county are doing their upmost in difficult times, and these awards shine a light on the often unsung work,” he said.

Peter Carey, the Laois County Manager, is very supportive.

“The hard work, attitude and desire of volunteers to enhance and protect their communities should constantly be acknowledged. I would like to thank Laois Community Forum for running this prestigious event and being the voice of the community in Laois,” he said.

Caroline Myers of Laois Sports Partnership said the organisation is delighted to be involved again this year.

“Volunteers play a very important part in clubs. We would encourage all active groups to engage with this process and it is important that they get recognition for the important role that they play,” she said.

Honor Deevy of the Council’s Community and Enterpise section invited entries. “We would encourage everyone to nominate an individual or group whom they think worthy of an award,” she said.
