Laois Leaf celebrated sustainable development in Laois on Friday, December 20th as they held an environmental awards night.

Five groups were awarded prize money of up to€2,200 to appreciate their sustainable community development. Judging was based on the presentations they submitted that were circulated to judges around the country.

In first place was Abbeyleix Bog receiving €500. Judges agreed they are doing great work collaborating with other community groups to build a strong network for sustainable local development and community based resource management.

In joint second Irish Wildlife Trust and Portlaoise Men’s Shed each received €450.

Everyone was very impressed with how much IWT has achieved. Their emphasis on engaging young people really sold their work.

While the judges said that although Portlaoise Men’s Shed was not leading any initiatives, its members were essential in helping others.

In joint third were Green School Community College Mountmellick and Culahill Tidy Towns each receiving €400.
