Almost 500 people are diagnosed with cancer in Laois each year, and The Irish Cancer Society says the number continue to grow nationwide .
There were 34,798 people diagnosed in 2011, 494 of those in Laois, according to the National Cancer Registry. One in three people will get cancer.
At the launch of Daffodil Day, the CEO of the Irish Cancer Society John McCormack said that as numbers increase, so will demand on services.
“We won’t give up until cancer does, we need the public to stand beside us. Together we can beat cancer and Daffodil Day is a way the people of Laois can join us in trying to make this vision a reality,” he said.
He thanked Laois volunteers, many of whom attended the recent launch of the 27th Daffodil Day, along with singer Daniel O’Donnell and his wife Majella who is battling cancer.
“Our volunteers are vital to making Daffodil Day a success in their communities. For the last 27 years they have been the lifeblood of our organisation and their continued support keeps our services going.” he said, also thanking Dell for their partnership.
Last year the fundraiser was badly hit by severe rain.
“While our volunteers braved the elements, the severe conditions kept many indoors. This year we have done our best to waterproof our plans - with new indoor collection locations, a national bag pack in Tescos, coffee mornings and an online app created by Dell as well as lots of other indoor activities,” said head of fundraising Mark Mellett.
The money goes towards cancer research, services and advocacy, as well as night nursing, for patients at home. The Irish Cancer Society Night Nurses are provided free for up to 10 nights. In 2013, 214 nights of care were provided to 50 patients in Laois.
The society have set an ambitious fundraising target of €3.45million, and are calling on the public to support them on Friday March 28, by volunteering to collect, organising a Daffodil Day event, or buying merchandise on the day or online.
