The loss of soldiers from Laois will marked at upcoming events in Laois aruond Heritage Week.
An ecumenical remembrance service for the young men who left Portarlington and the surrounding area to serve in WW1 will take place on August 29. Meet at St Michael’s Church at 7.30pm to walk to St Paul’s, French Church St, Portarlington for 8pm.

Meanwhile, the Mountmellick WWI Research and Commemoration Group are commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War, starting on Friday August 22 with a concert by Emer Dunne and Drua in Mountmellick Arts Centre.

An Ecumenical Service takes place in St Joseph’s Church on Sunday August 24 at 3pm, followed by a march to the museum to launch an exhibition of memorabilia.
On Sunday August 31 at 2.30pm all will assemble at St Joseph’s Church to march to the library for an unveiling of a WW1 Memorial with the names of local men who died in the war.
Afterwards Sheila Coyle presents ‘Stories from World War One’, a performance in the Macra Hall.
Meanwhile Michael Moylan who runs the Irish History Live interactive shows for children will focus on WWI when he visits Laois this year.
Children will also be able to dress up in uniform and haldley historical artefacts at shows in Mountmellick, Portlaoise libraries on August 26 and in Abbelyeix, Mountrath and Portarlington libraries on August 27. Contact the libraries for more details.
