On the 150th anniversary of his birth, a new generation of young fans of poet WB Yeats has been born, thanks to a competition run by Yeats 2015 and Laois Education Centre.

The local winners of the ‘Yeats Among Schoolchildren’ art and writing competition, were announced in Laois Education Centre on May 7.

First prizewinners from Laois are Amy Kelly from Arles NS in the junior/senior infants category, and Miriam Senior from St Paul’s NS Mountmellick in the 1st/2nd class category.

Along with two more winners from Birr and Tullamore, and four from each of the 21 Education Centres around Ireland, their work will feature in a book to be launched during the commemoration of Yeats’ birthday on June 13, and distributed to all primary schools and libraries nationwide.

Over 210 children and 15 teachers from 11 schools had taken part from Laois Education Centre’s catchment area that covers Laois, west Offaly and north Tipp.

Children were encouraged to use visual arts and literacy to express their feelings about the poetry of the Nobel prizewinning poet who penned favourites such as ‘I will arise and go now’ and ‘The Stolen Child’.

Jim Enright is centre director.

“We are delighted to be associated with a project like this which along with promoting access and enjoyment of the poetry of WB Yeats, enables pupils to understand the language and imagery used, and promote greater literacy skills,” he said.
