The community of Ballyroan has dug deep and raised €40,000 in a week to take Coillte to the High Court in a final bid to stop them building an 18 turbine windfarm at Cullenagh mountain.

A legal team is now engaged and working on the appeal, but with another €10,000 needed to cover their bill, local awareness group People Over Wind (POW) are asking for help.

“We are appealing for more contributions, particularly from Portlaoise and Abbeyleix, to challenge this dubious decision. This is a gateway project which may lead to multiple damaging wind developments in Laois,” claims spokesperson Henry Fingleton.

Over twenty families have committed €1,000 each.

“Such is the level of concern and anger in the area, most cannot afford to contribute this amount but feel compelled to fight this injustice and save their community,” Mr Fingleton said.

Coillte’s application for the wind farm was turned down by Laois County Council, but approved by An Bord Pleanála, overruling their own inspector’s recommendation. To donate see www.peopleoverwind.com.
