Abbeyleix Further Education Centre had many reasons to celebrate last Friday at the annual FETAC and ECDL awards night held in the Manor Hotel. The night had a particular significance for the staff and students due to the fact that two full-time Level 6 programmes were successfully completed by Co. Laois VEC students for the first time at AFEC.
It was an exciting moment for the graduates when they were presented with Major Awards in Art & Business and Business Administration and a proud night for the staff of the Centre. The impetus for the development and introduction of both courses came from Abbeyleix Further Education Centre’s own students who expressed an interest in furthering their studies in Art & Business in Co. Laois and if possible in the study environment of the Centre. Completion of a FETAC Level 6 course enhances students’ prospects of employment and progression to third level.
A number of students who completed the course last June went on to study at 3rd level institutions throughout the country including Carlow IT, Tallaght IT, Tipperary Institute and Limerick School of Art & Design.
FETAC Certificates were presented across a range of disciplines – Art/Craft/Design (Portfolio Preparation, Level 5), Art & Business Level 6, Nursing Studies (Level 5), Community Care (Level 5), Business Studies Administration (Level 5), Business Studies Secretarial (Level 5), Business Administration Level 6, Vocational Skills (Woodwork, Pyrography, Upholstery, Art & Design, Computer Applications, Horticulture, Room Design at levels 3, 4 & 5), Care of the older Person (Level 5). There were a total of 140 students to receive FETAC component awards, FETAC major awards, Equal Skills, ECDL and ECDL Advanced certificates.
Helen Kavanagh, Centre Director, congratulated the students and acknowledged the vital supporting role students’ families play in helping them complete further and continuing education studies. Helen congratulated the staff on their professionalism and dedication which ensured the great success the Centre has experienced. She wished the students all the best with their future careers and studies and reminded them that the doors of Abbeyleix Further Education Centre are always open to them.
Joe Cunningham Adult Education Officer for Co. Laois VEC congratulated the staff of the Centre. He congratulated each of the students and awarded the certificates on the night. To close the awards ceremony 3 Art and Design students – Maria Desmond, Fiona Doyle and Amy Brannigan – presented a piece of artwork for the new reception area of the VEC offices. The piece was accepted on behalf of Anne O’Keeffe, CEO of Co. Laois VEC, by Joe Cunningham who thanked the students and tutors who worked on the piece last summer.
The Awards Ceremony was followed by a reception in the hotel. Staff, students and their families had a very enjoyable evening.
