County hall should make sure there is play equipment available in Portlaoise’s playgrounds that suitable for children with mobility problems, according to Cllr Willie Aird.

Cllr Aird said he had received a call about the one at the Leisure Centre.

Sports Officer, Ann Marie Maher said the counci’s playgrounds are based on the principle of inclusive play.

“In the Town Park, Timahoe Rd the playground area is predefined and already full of equipment. In addition we have no budget to further develop this playground,” she said.

However, she said she was available to speak to Cllr Aird about his concerns.

Cllr Aird said Minister of State Michael Ring had made money available for specialised equipment.

“I don’t know if this would fit in, but we should write to him and ask. If parents are coming to our playgrounds with children that have special needs, it would be nice to provide whatever is suitable to them,” he told this months meeting of Portlaoise Town Council.
