“THE closure of rural garda stations is welcome news for thieves,” remarked Cllr Matthew Keegan, commenting on a council motion to call on the Minister for Justice to reconsider the closure of so many stations.
The motion was proposed at the recent Portlaoise Town Council meeting by Cllr Kathleen O’Brien, who said that burglaries are rising in rural areas.
“When the station is open it does deter people from breaking in,” she said.
Cllr Jerry Lodge also said that crime is rising, “more personal crime” that just simple theft.
“We can not go on closing rural garda stations,” he said.
