A SPORTS shop in Mountrath suffered considerable damage last Wednesday night after a fire broke out there. The fire happened in Colgan Sports on Main Street in the town at approximately 11pm.

Laois Fire Services were notified about the fire at 11.20pm and fire brigades from both Mountrath and Rathdowney attended the scene. The fire was coming out through the large front windows of the shop when the fire brigade arrived but the fire services had the flames extinguished by midnight.

Chief Fire Officer Declan Power told the Leinster Express that no people were injured and those in the apartments above the shop got out okay. Two premises beside Colgan Sports did suffer smoke damage as did the apartments upstairs. Mr Power added that the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
